DUBAI, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Thanks to a brace from Sardar Azmoun at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Dubai, Iran defeated Vietnam 2-0 in AFC Asian Cup Group D on Saturday.
The win assured Iran a spot in the Round of 16.
Iran whitewashed Yemen 5-0 in their first match in Group D.
Iran dominated today's match. In the 38th minute, Azmoun found the back of the net with a header from Saman Goddos' cross.
Iran, clearly intent on scoring a second, continued to press, and their patience was rewarded on 68 minutes when Azmoun neatly took a Mehdi Torabi pass and fired past Van Lam to extend his side's advantage, registering his third goal of the tournament.
Iran are set to complete their group stage fixtures against Iraq next Wednesday in Dubai. Vietnam will face Yemen in Al Ain on the same day.
